New Home Builder’s Guide to starting 2018 with a Clutter-Free House
We are already nearly through January and the New Year is well and truly underway – well, it certainly is for new home builder Perry Homes! The Christmas decorations have been packed away and all the present wrappings are thrown out. So now is the perfect time to take a look at the rest of your home and begin to declutter.
Whilst this task can seem quite daunting, it is so much easier when you start with a plan. Perhaps with the new school year starting, it would be a good idea to begin with the children’s bedrooms. Get them engaged in the task too and with some gentle persuasion, you may be surprised how easy it is.
Why not devise a plan with your child to hold a garage sale when the job is completed. The children can decide which toys and clothes they no longer need and want to sell. Give them ownership of selling their own things, which will give them a feeling of responsibility. They will have to determine how much they want to sell them for (parental advice may be needed here!). All the proceeds from their property, can be put towards a special purchase for them. Maybe they want the latest computer game, a new bike etc. This can result in a win-win situation for all and bribery never really hurt anyone J.
Whilst the children get started on their bedrooms and play area, you too could start with your own wardrobe. Throw out all the clothes you haven’t worn for the last three years. You know the ones you have kept just in case they come back into fashion, or when you lose those four kilos. New home builder Perry Homes, loves supporting local charities – why not give your castoffs to organisations such as the Salvos, Lifeline and Vinnies! There are also charities such as Dress for Success who specialise in helping women get back into the workforce and they really need corporate clothes. Don’t forget about your handbags, belts, shoes, scarves and other accessories too!
Once you have started, you will may find you will be on a roll and it will be easier to move through the rest of the house. The kitchen pantry – throw out all those plastic containers that no longer have lids. What about all the condiments and other cooking ingredients which have gone out of date. You know the palm sugar you bought to make the Thai salad and haven’t used again.
Next move on to the linen press and the bathroom cabinet. Give all your old towels and bedding to the local vet or animal shelter – they will welcome these with open arms. Discard all your old cosmetics and medications such as eye drops – they do more harm than good anyway, if they have been opened for a while.
This whole decluttering process may take some time, but you will be amazed at how great it feels when you have completed the task. Afterwards, you can relax and take pleasure that your home has been completely rejuvenated and you have more space in your cupboards – no longer having to squeeze things in!
