Whenever you’re asking around, don’t hesitate to ask more questions or for recommendations from locals. Whomever knows a little about the home builders in the area may also know about their reputation or may know which one to recommend.

    1. Home Builder’s Association Websites

Every country, city, province or region has some type of home building association. These are organisations that can provide a full list of builders local to each area that have become members of the organisation. These lists can be a great way to get started and gather more information on home building companies around you. (For example, the Master Builders Assocation New South Wales is a good place to start.)

    2. Draftsmen or Architects

If you’ve decided to build a custom home and are working with a professional architect or draftsman, it is likely they’ve worked with plenty of other people designing their homes from scratch. This means that these professionals can recommend various home builders in the area or provide referrals for various companies.

    3. Bankers or Lenders

As many people must acquire a loan in order to build or purchase a home, they’ll have to see a banker or lender of some kind. Most bankers will have approved loans for a number of different home renovation, home construction or home buying projects. There’ll know whether or not a home builder was able to stay within budget and can provide you with recommendations based on their findings over the years.

    4. Open Houses and Realtors

If you know of any open houses in the area, visit them to get an idea for the quality level of various homes in the area. Whether you like or dislike the home, you can ask the realtor present at the home who the building company was. If you liked it, keep their name in mind. If not, make a note of which company not to hire.

    5. Friends, Family, and Co-workers

If any of your friends, family or co-workers have recently built or bought a home, ask them about their experience and who they worked with. This will help you get an idea of other companies that are local to the area and you can get very direct, personal feedback from customers of those companies.

    6. Online or Social Media

With the power of the internet, you’ll be able to scan the region for local and popular home building companies around you. Some companies may also have a social media feed that you can follow to learn more about them, their homes or their ‘personality’. You may also be able to find customer feedback online as well.
