One of the biggest issues that home owners face is in living expenses of course, and energy bills are right at the top of the list of concerns.

Fortunately, we love sharing practical energy-saving tips that we have learned over more than 20 years of experience as Northern NSW home builders. They are easy to learn and can amount to significant savings throughout the year.

Here are some of our top energy-saving tips you can start implementing today:

  1. Control heating costs: A little fine-tuning of temperature and time controls in your house can mean having some extra bucks to spend as you like every month. Even a little downward adjustment of 1°C can potentially save you 10% on your monthly bill! Although regions and neighbourhoods may vary in temperatures, the point to keep in mind is that even a slight adjustment in temperature for rooms that are regularly occupied can really start making a difference.
  2. Reduce your heating bill by improving insulation: Good insulation helps to decrease the amount of energy needed to cool and heat your home. Whether your home is old or new, improving the insulation is more than likely to have a positive effect on your monthly energy bills.
  3. Draught proof your doors and windows: Draught proofing your doors and windows is a great way to keep warm air in, and cold air out. Draught stripping is inexpensive and also stops wood from expanding during the wetter seasons. Not only does draught proofing around your home save you money, it also makes your home more comfortable to live in.
  4. Use low-energy light bulbs: Of course, these eco-friendly light bulbs use much less energy than regular bulbs do, but what makes them even more appealing is the fact that they last much longer (like 8000 hours vs 1000!) and get this, they basically emit the same amount of light too!
  5. Lowering your water temperature: Lowering the temperature of your hot water heater doesn’t mean you are going to be shivering in cold at the end of each shower. The reality is, the temperature is almost always much hotter than what you realistically need. You can still enjoy your showers, and the extra change in your pockets later.
