Designate a separate and dedicated workspace

Finding a workspace where you can work in peace is essential to being able to produce quality work. You should try to avoid having a home office right next to the living room or the dining room as this tends to be the most visited areas of the house. This is especially true if there are children in the house throughout the day.

Whether you work full-time from home, or just a few days a week, it's to your benefit that you actually designate an area for work-only instead of going room to room carrying your laptop and checking e-mails every now and then.

If possible, your office should have a door you can close so you can cut out all outside distractions to produce higher quality work.

Set up wireless connections

Working remotely requires that you have a reliable internet connection and network. Needless to say, getting your wireless network set up properly is the best way to avoid frustration and enjoy the benefits of working from home.

These steps should get you started in the right direction:

  1. Headcount of devices that need internet connection: Count how many devices you’ll need to connect and determine the Wi-Fi bandwidth needed.
  2. Set up modem and router: If you don’t already have one, most ISPs (Internet Service providers) will provide modems to you. You will also need a router to connect to the modem and this will emit the wireless signal to all your wireless devices. 

Remember work/life balance

Working from home has many perks, but requires discipline in learning how to manage your priorities and resisting the urge to answer e-mails at 2am to prevent turning “working from home” into “work is home”. Of course, there will always be special situations where you need to answer your e-mails at odd times, but a healthy work/life balance is important to maintain quality work production and quality of life.
